The 102nd Anniversary of the Knish War January 28th at a National Landmark Site!
I'm not sure I realized that the Eldridge Street Synagogue is a National Landmark Site!What an honor it is to be doing a family story hour there just two weeks from today!
Built in 1887, it was spiritual home for immigrants from Russia, Poland, Lithuania, and other Eastern European countries. Who knows—maybe one of your relatives worshiped here. You can find out on their website.
Restored in 2007, this is an inspiring place to visit. Rescued from the pigeons and neglect, it look "as though the synagogue was held up by strings from heaven,” as Roberta Brandes Gratz, founder of the Museum at Eldridge Street put it. Today, it simply looks heavenly!
I am looking forward to reading The Knish War on Rivington Street there on January 28th at
11 AM. I'm hoping the weather will be good so that getting out will be easy. And yes, there will be knishes! Hope to see you there!
